Why Family Business Succession Fails (and how to fix it)
AAB / About / Our Team / Audit & Assurance / Thomas Byrne
Audit Assistant Manager
Technology. Charities. CLGs. DACs. SMEs. Owner-managed businesses.
Audit & assurance. Risk assessment. SORP reporting.
“It’s about delivering a smooth audit while adding value wherever possible.”
An Audit Assistant Manager based in our Dublin office, Thomas works across a diverse client portfolio, with a particular focus on technology businesses and organisations operating under SORP, including charities and Companies Limited by Guarantee (CLGs), both with and without share capital, as well as Designated Activity Companies (DACs). His role combines technical delivery with team leadership, ensuring audits are completed efficiently while maintaining strong client relationships throughout the process.
With AAB since 2021, Thomas now leads audits for clients, staying close to internal teams and stakeholders throughout the process.
“A typical week involves staying closely connected with clients from the initial planning stages of an audit right through to completion.
I’m responsible for ensuring audit programmes are well organised and progressing as planned. That includes managing timelines, reviewing audit files and working directly with clients and, in many cases, their boards or audit committees.
There’s also a strong people element to the role. I support the development of trainees and early career team members, helping them build confidence and technical ability. Seeing that progression over time is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do.”
“I’ve always had an interest in business, particularly accounting.
It started in school, where I enjoyed the subject and had a strong aptitude for maths. From there, it felt like a natural progression into this career. I suppose I naturally gravitated towards accountancy.
The professional exams were probably the most challenging part of the journey to chartership, but through consistent study and support from colleagues, friends and family, I was able to work through them. That experience reinforced the importance of discipline and consistency. If you can get through them, you’re well equipped for the career ahead I feel.”
“A core part of my role is applying technical knowledge in a practical and meaningful way.
Understanding accounting standards and audit principles allows me to identify risk areas, assess internal controls and ensure work is delivered to a high standard. But beyond compliance, I always aim to add value.
Audit shouldn’t be seen as a purely regulatory exercise. It’s an opportunity to help clients better understand their systems and processes, and to identify areas where efficiencies or improvements can be made.
A ‘no surprises’ approach is something clients really value. By maintaining clear communication throughout the process, we can deliver a smooth audit while also providing insights that support better decision-making.”
“Building strong relationships starts with understanding expectations from the outset.
From the outset, I focus on understanding each client’s expectations, how their company operates and the challenges they face. That early engagement helps set the tone for the entire audit.
While maintaining independence is fundamental, it’s equally important to be approachable and accessible. Having an open line of communication helps resolve queries quickly and keeps the audit moving forward.”
“One of the most rewarding aspects of the role is seeing progress, both for clients and within the team.
With clients, it’s about understanding their business and seeing them develop and grow over time. That also helps deepen my own knowledge across different sectors.
Internally, it’s about supporting people on their journey to becoming chartered and watching them grow into confident professionals. Seeing trainees develop their skills, engage with clients and take ownership of their work is incredibly rewarding.”
“Being part of AAB creates real opportunities for learning and career progression. That’s exciting for me and for the team members I’m supporting. It allows individuals to develop their strengths, find their niche and continue to grow within the firm.
I’m looking forward to what comes next.”
